How We Can Help the Career Services Professional

How We Can Help

As a career services professional, you know that transition from full-time student to young working professional can be tricky. While college is a time for exploration, rigorous study, living independently, and fun, the job search is an activity that requires planning, discipline, networking, perseverance, and focus in order to find the right job.

While some students have a clear vision of their future, our research shows that a majority of graduating seniors will continue their exploratory journey until well after they graduate, especially in identifying the perfect job or career. This is especially true for students with a liberal arts or general business major, where a defined career path may not be obvious. Like us, you know that the average student needs a lot of help and guidance in their job search.

Specifically, our experience shows that new grads need help in three key areas:

1) Identifying careers they would enjoy and be a fit for their skills and interests.

2) Developing and implementing a job search strategy focused on their target careers.

3) Learning how to interview.

While you would like to be available to assist every graduating senior before they graduate, the fact is, for a variety of reasons beyond your control, your ability to help is limited. Here’s why:

  • On average, over 50% of graduating seniors do not have a job at graduation; in recessionary years recent graduate job placement can be as low as 25%.
  • Most of those without a job at graduation have not started their job search and may not begin one for as long as 6 months after they graduate.
  • More and more graduates are postponing their job search to pursue travel, volunteer work, or other interests before starting their careers.
  • Surveys show that, on average, well less than 1/2 of students visit career services departments before they graduate.
  • Some graduates may be looking for positions in geographic areas that are beyond your network.

We have a lot respect for the career services profession and your ability to provide important guidance to graduating seniors. However, we know that, based on the thousands of interviews we do each year, there are many students who fit the profile described above. Very simply, you can’t help those who don’t ask for your help. And, once the graduating senior leaves school and goes home, your ability to help is substantially reduced.

That’s how GradStaff can help. We can be your partner in expanding your reach in providing assistance and career coaching to your graduating seniors. We are the leading specialist in placing new college grads in entry-level positions after graduation. Operating from a network of 8 hub locations across the U.S., we have placed candidates over 45 major metro areas and the list is growing every month. On top of that, our placement model is totally focused on finding the right career fit for each candidate based on both a skills assessment and career exploration. In addition, we serve hundreds of clients across the country and can augment your own network of hiring companies. Finally, our success rates are high and, best of all, our service is free to candidates.
